Metal fabrication and welding shop insurance in Ontario.

Cutting, welding, grinding, forming and off-site work change the property and liability story. Describe every process, not only the finished product.

The focus is non-structural light fabrication. For structural steel, foundries, plating, coating or in-house heat treating, Anthony first checks which insurers will consider the operation.

Define the fabrication boundary

A light fabrication shop may cut, bend, weld, grind, assemble and finish parts, while another business installs structural members or operates higher-hazard processes. List the percentage of sales by operation, the materials handled and whether work occurs at the shop, a customer site or both.

  • MIG, TIG, stick, robotic or other welding
  • Laser, waterjet, plasma, saw and shear cutting
  • Grinding, bending, forming and light assembly
  • Mobile welding, installation and repair
  • Any structural, pressure-vessel or load-bearing work

Hot work changes the property conversation

Welding and cutting can introduce ignition sources, compressed gases, fumes, combustible material and fire-watch questions. Document actual hot-work procedures, separation, housekeeping, fire protection, cylinder storage and maintenance. Safety sources describe the operation; the insurance contract determines coverage.

Account for dust, fumes, fluids and waste

Grinding dust, metal fines, coatings, solvents, gases and waste streams can affect property, liability and pollution questions. Describe ventilation, collection, storage and disposal accurately. Pollution coverage is not an automatic part of every commercial package.

Separate shop work from mobile operations

Tools, equipment, materials and finished work may leave the premises for installation or repair. The site conditions, type of work, height, hot work, vehicles, customer property and subcontractors should be disclosed. A shop-only description can leave the insurer information incomplete.

Finished parts and end-use still matter

A fabricated bracket, enclosure, frame or assembly may become part of a larger product. Insurers may ask who designed it, how it is inspected, where it is installed, what happens if it fails and whether it is sold into the US or another jurisdiction.

Treat outside processing as part of the workflow

Heat treating, plating, coating, painting, galvanizing and other processes may be subcontracted. Record who performs them, who transports the property, the values involved and how suppliers are selected. Outsourcing changes the facts; it does not make the exposure disappear.

Prepare the fabrication information package

Provide sales by process, materials, end-use, locations, mobile-work percentage, hot-work controls, machinery and equipment values, customer-property values, subcontractors, exports, contracts, losses and requested coverage.

Common questions

Can a structural steel operation contact Westoak?

Yes. The published focus is non-structural light fabrication, so Anthony first checks whether an available insurer will consider structural work before requesting a full information package.

How is welding added to a machine shop quote?

Describe the type and amount of welding, hot-work controls, materials, location and end-use. The insurer can then decide whether to include it and on what terms.

What insurance can help a welding business?

The starting list can include commercial property, tools and equipment, business interruption, commercial general liability, liability after work is completed and commercial auto. Mobile work, hot work, materials and end-use determine what belongs in the final package.

What if finishing or heat treating is subcontracted?

Disclose the process, supplier relationship, values, transportation and contracts. The broker can then check how the policies address property and liability through the outsourced step.

Primary sources

Safety sources explain the operation, not whether insurance will pay a claim. Use the current insurance contract and its certificate or summary page when making a coverage decision.
